About the Author

“I am Marion Sidney Mayer, born over 87 years ago in 1935 in the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana. I grew up in the small but charming town of Winnsboro. As a young man, I pursued my interest in science, eventually earning a Ph.D. in Entomology from the prestigious Texas A&M University.

I began my scientific career with the US Department of Agriculture in 1963 in Gainesville, Florida. I spent over 35 dedicated years with the department before retiring at the end of 1999. Though my professional life was consumed by the intricate world of insects, but I treasure the evenings I spend reading the rich accounts of Civil War historians. From the approximately 300 books I’ve read, I’ve gathered a collection of colorful stories and humor from the period. I’m thankful to the era’s many talented authors and letter writers for bringing this history to life.

Now in my later years, I find myself reflecting on a life rich with scientific exploration and historical insight. The events and characters of the Civil War continue to fascinate me as a lens into the human spirit during a turbulent crossroads in our nation’s history. I feel fortunate to have pursued my academic interests while cultivating such an edifying hobby.”

About The Book

It is a collection of stories compiled over 25 years from many sources. I extend my most sincere gratitude to all the multitudes of historians and other authors whose work I have collected the stories herein. I know there are more events and stories that I have not found. I also sincerely apologize to the authors whose work I have included here but have lost over the years.
